The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) carries out a complex and time-consuming process but having a sense of what to expect will help set you up for success.

We’ve put together an outline to help you get started, but for the precise dates and times, be sure to visit the CaRMS website and add these dates to your calendar. With so many steps to the match process, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the timeline.

Not sure what residency matching is all about? Check out Everything you need to know about CaRMS.

Summer/fall 2022

Get a head start by working on your personal statements, polishing up your resumé, and finalizing the list of programs you’d like to apply to. You should also have a good idea about which physicians and/or professors you’d like to use as references. Let them know in advance so that they have time to prepare an excellent reference letter.

October 3, 2022

The CaRMS Online portal opens for business! All registered applicants, as well as final-year Canadian medical graduates, receive an email with information on how to log into the CaRMS portal and to start their application.

Applications are due on January 10, 2023, so you still have plenty of time to finalize your resumé and other supporting documents.

The portal gives you all the information you need about specific program requirements, as well as about how your references get their letters to CaRMS on time.

Tip: The CFMS/CaRMS Matchbook comes out in the fall and contains lots of information to help you navigate the matching process.

December 7, 2022

You can now start selecting the programs you intend to apply to through the CaRMS portal. Your medical school transcripts and Medical School Performance Record (MSPR) are due toward the beginning of January. Your faculty sends these directly to CaRMS, but it’s up to you to make sure that this step is properly completed. You can track and confirm that this has happened through the CaRMS portal.

November 23, 2022 DEADLINE

If you’re a bilingual applicant and would like your references to be translated through the CaRMS-facilitated translation service, this is the deadline to submit your requests online to ensure they’ll be completed in time for file review.

December 1, 2022 DEADLINE

December, 2022 to January 2023

Mid-to-late January 2023

February 6 - 26, 2023

The national interview period takes place during this timeframe.

March 9, 2023 DEADLINE

Your rank order list is due by 15:00 ET today via the CaRMS portal. Be sure to mark this due date on your calendar because late lists will not be accepted.

Lots of emotions go into this big decision. Whether you’re ranking on your own or as a part of a couple, remember, your ranking is a binding contract to your matched program. Besides the program and faculty itself, don’t forget to consider the bigger picture – like your lifestyle and the city that you’ll be choosing to live in.

March 22, 2023

It’s Match Day! Today, you get the big news (via the CaRMS portal) about where you’ll be doing your residency training. As stressful as it is thrilling, today is an emotional day. Whether you get your 1st, 2nd or 5th choice or even if you don’t match at all, you’ve been working towards this day for so long – you’ve got this! Now’s the time to celebrate with your class and loved ones! Keep an eye out for our #MDMatch t-shirts by staying in touch with your class rep or following us on MD social media

Transition to residency (TTR)

Now that you know where you’re going, you can start to plan! Here are some next steps to take to help you and your family feel prepared:

  1. Watch for your email invitation to the MD TTR Panel event, where you’ll hear from specialists from MD Financial Management, Scotiabank, the CMA, accountants, tax professionals and other key players who can help set you up for success
  2. Meet with your MD Advisor to collect your “Welcome to Residency” kit and get started with your strategy session
  3. For your partner/spouse, watch for your email invitation to The Flipside Life TTR Panel event, where they’ll hear from the wives, husbands and partners of medical students who have been in their shoes, transitioning to residency, right along with you
